There’s a good reason why tennis is popular in Los Angeles. Tennis was named the healthiest sport during the US Open in September, while a 2018 study published in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that tennis players live nearly ten years longer than sedentary persons. However, the tennis culture in L.A. County has been thriving for decades, thanks to trailblazing players like the Williams sisters and Billie Jean King.

One of the 17 chapters of the USTA Southern California (ustasocal.com), which is the national governing body of tennis, has provided assistance by managing the pro tour, adult leagues, junior competitions, and grassroots initiatives. In 2024, there were more over 60,000 adult league registrations and more than 6,500 junior team tennis registrations in Southern California, where more than 2.5 million individuals played tennis.

USTA’s “Taking it to the Streets” initiative will introduce pop-up tennis to new players throughout Los Angeles this year. “We need to be in the non-traditional tennis space if we want to keep growing,” Kronemann says. “The community is the key to success. We must keep exploring those fields.

There are hundreds of public and private tennis facilities in L.A. County, ranging from well-known country clubs like the Jack Kramer Club and Riviera Country Club to open spaces utilized by social tennis organizations like the TuMe Tennis Club and All-Love Racquet Club.

As a former collegiate tennis coach, I believe that schools like UCLA and USC have some of the greatest venues in the world. “The tennis facility at Claremont Mudd-Scripps is stunning,” Kronemann remarks. “I would be remiss if I did not mention some of the public parks with good community tennis facilities, such as the Michelle and Barack Obama Sports Complex.” What should I wear? Below, we’ve got you covered.
